A film made by people in Brent about power, inequality and the place we call home.

Ten community reporters. One London borough. Real conversations about what people value, what needs to change and what we can do about it.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

A wheelchair was provided
One person featured in the film who did not have the wheelchair he needed subsequently received one.

A participant became a councillor
Amandine, who appeared in the film, has since been elected as a local councillor.

The conversations continued
The screenings were never just about watching a film. They created spaces for people to talk about what they had seen, recognise experiences from their own lives and communities, and ask what could happen next.

People talked about inequality in Brent, who gets heard and who doesn’t, the pressures facing local communities, and the gap between decisions made about places and the experiences of the people who actually live there.

Some people recognised their own experiences in the stories on screen. Others told us the film had shown them parts of their borough, and lives within it, that they had not previously encountered. The conversations also moved beyond identifying problems. People talked about power, connection and what communities can do when local knowledge and lived experience are taken seriously.

Perhaps most importantly, people wanted the conversation to continue. There was interest in sharing the film more widely, bringing different communities together around it and exploring whether a similar community led approach could work elsewhere.

The screening may finish when the credits roll. The conversation doesn’t.

GET INVOLVED
Invite us to your community or organisation

1 in 32 is free to watch and share. Our time and expertise are not free.

The community reporters and project team are available to present the film, take part in panels and discussions, facilitate conversations and share what we learned about community reporting, inequality, power and creating change.

We can also work with communities, councils and organisations interested in developing a similar approach in their own borough or neighbourhood.

We believe strongly in sharing what we have learned. We also believe that lived experience, community knowledge and people’s time should be properly valued.

If you invite us to contribute to an event, screening, workshop or project, please include a budget to pay the people involved.
